Children's braces

If your child is under 18, they may be eligible for free NHS braces. To find out if they qualify, their dentist can refer them for a free NHS assessment.

If your child doesn't meet the criteria for NHS treatment or you'd prefer a wider choice of braces with shorter waiting times, we also offer private orthodontic care. Private treatment is available to everyone and you don't need a referral.

Who’s eligible for NHS braces?

NHS funding is available to children and teens who need braces to improve their dental health. We receive a limited amount of funding, so your child may need to join a waiting list before we can see them for an NHS assessment or start their treatment.

Below are some concerns that typically qualify for NHS braces.

Upper front teeth that protrude more than 6mm

Additional (supernumerary) teeth

Multiple missing teeth

Lower front teeth that protrude more than 3.5mm

Open bites of more than 4mm

During your NHS assessment, your specialist orthodontist will evaluate your smile using a rating system known as the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). It’s a fair and objective way to determine who qualifies for funding.

You don’t need a referral from your dentist to explore private treatment options. Our team will work with you to create a tailored treatment plan that suits your child’s needs and lifestyle.

My son had his braces on for almost 2 years – he had them taken off yesterday and wow! What a smile. He (and we) are delighted with his new teeth. The team at Splash are marvellous – skilled, efficient, friendly and great with teenagers. I highly recommend them.
